Baking has been a hobby of mine for as long as I can remember. As soon as I was old enough to crave sweets (which was pretty much since birth), I wanted to make my own. After all, I couldn’t always rely on Mom to bring back Twinkies from the grocery store…something about them “not being good for you.” But I could always count on my pantry to be full of flour, sugar, chocolate chips, and a box of brownie mix or two. And sometimes, you just really need cookies right now. The only way I could make that happen was to bake them myself.
In the time since my first forays into the wonderful world of pastry (I recall one time going especially badly when I tried to make my own Fluff by putting marshmallows in the microwave), I’ve grown a lot. There’s not a Kitchen Aid attachment I haven’t met, chocolate I can’t temper, or stiff peaks that I can’t recognize. And in the process, baking has become an exercise in mindfulness.
The thing about baking that sets it apart from cooking is the precision. Flour has to be spooned and leveled, brown sugar has to be firmly packed, and you better not slip in some extra baking soda by mistake. Baking requires focus, attention, and care. And that focus helps keep me present and truly experience the moment in front of me. It’s intensely relaxing to follow through a recipe, step by step, and be comforted by the knowledge that if you just listen to the instructions carefully, you’ll be rewarded with a beautiful dessert at the end.
Baking is an excellent way to slow down and reconnect with your senses, so for National Dessert Day, why not bake a celebratory dessert rather than just eat one? It’ll help you truly experience this special day to the fullest.
